GST (Goods and Services Tax) registration is mandatory for businesses in India whose annual turnover exceeds ₹40 lakhs for goods (₹20 lakhs for services and special category states). Once registered, a business gets a unique 15-digit GSTIN and can legally collect GST, claim input tax credit, and file returns.

Step-by-Step GST Registration Process

Step 1: Visit the GST Portal

Go to www.gst.gov.in and click “Register Now” under Taxpayers. You will fill Part A of Form GST REG-01.

Step 2: Part A — Basic Details & OTP Verification

Enter PAN, mobile number, and email. Verify via OTP. You will receive a Temporary Reference Number (TRN).

Step 3: Part B — Business Details & Document Upload

Using your TRN, complete Part B with business name, type, principal place of business, HSN/SAC codes for your goods/services, and bank details. Upload all required documents.

Step 4: Submit with DSC or EVC

Companies and LLPs must use a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC). Proprietorships and partnerships can use an Electronic Verification Code (EVC) sent to their mobile.

Step 5: Receive Your GSTIN

You get an Application Reference Number (ARN) immediately. The GST officer reviews within 3–7 working days. If documents are correct, your GSTIN is issued. If clarification is needed, respond to the officer’s notice (Form GST REG-03) within 7 working days.

Penalties for Not Registering Under GST

  • 10% of tax due (minimum ₹10,000) for non-fraudulent cases
  • 100% of tax due for deliberate fraud or evasion

  • Legal compliance: Operate without fear of penalties
  • Business credibility: Registered businesses are trusted by banks, vendors, and clients
